Treating the historic building stock with the necessary level of understanding and responsibility requires professionals with knowledge and skills that goes beyond their standard education. Starting Fall 2022, the new continuing education programmes at the Institute of Preservation and Construction History (IDB) will address this precise challenge of training experts in the area of preservation. The programmes stand out in particular with the focus on applied preservation and the collaborations with several partner institutions from different disciplines. In addition to a four-semester-long MAS programme, two one-semester-long CAS programmes are offered.

The teaching of subject-specific skills and of making informed assessments and decisions make the interdisciplinary programme in preservation and construction history unique in Switzerland. The programme will focus on the identification and evaluation of existing qualities. Participants will gain in-depth understanding and awareness for maintaining both existing heritage as well as appreciating the value of high-quality objects that are not officially protected. In addition to the fundamental knowledge and positions on preservation, the programme will address sustainable approaches on the further use of embedded resources and present holistic processes for the long-term preservation of heritage objects.

The MAS is a further education programme aimed at university graduates with a master’s degree who wish to contribute to the preservation of the architectural heritage by acquiring additional skills.
