The Summer School “Preserving Modernism: Object-oriented Architectural Research via 3D Scans” is a cooperation between ETH Zurich and the Kharkiv School of Architecture (currently based in Lviv, Ukraine). We will actively train architecture six visiting students and an architecture professor from Ukraine with skills in 3d-scanning and point cloud processing of building and objects. The workshop will be accompanied by theoretical inputs on the topics of object-oriented architectural theory and history, preservation, building research, inventarisation, and 3d semantics with a focus on modernism. Following the summer school, the students will be able to scan the selected buildings in Lviv, Ukraine on their own and contribute to the preservation of modernism in Ukraine under the supervision of Myroslava Liakhovych (Chair of the Theory of Architecture, ETH Zurich).
The goal of the Summer School is threefold: First, to introduce future Ukrainian architects to the technological and theoretical context of an object-oriented approach to architectural research. Second, to train them in advanced research techniques and collect data on buildings. Third, to enable them to contribute to the preservation of modernism in Ukraine and raise awareness about this heritage in their home country. Together this strengthens transfers of knowledge between Ukraine and Western Europe.
