Since 2020, the architectural firm Ruggero Tropeano Architekten has been leading a conservation and restoration campaign for the assembly hall scheduled for a total of four years. It will be accompanied by the Cantonal Department for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in Zurich, the Real Estate Department of ETH Zurich, the Institute for Structural Heritage and the Preservation of Historical Monuments at ETH Zurich, as well as other external experts, both technically and institutionally. The tasks extend to the entire hall: the partial instability of the parquet floor, the partially cracked wainscoting and stucco surfaces, the fragile polychrome colored plaster on structural elements, etc. Extensive material analyses are carried out under the premise of careful conservation that does justice to the historical materiality. In addition, there is the challenge of developing acoustics and lighting technology for the auditorium that is adapted to today’s standards and takes into account the value of the object. The articles in this volume provide insights into various fields of activity related to the conservation and restoration of the assembly hall, which at the same time encompass several disciplines.
