When: Thursday, April 10, 2025, 7:00 PM
Where: S AM, Steinenberg 7, Basel
An event held as part of the exhibition «What Was Could Be: Experiments Between Preservation and Architecture» at the Swiss Architecture Museum S AM.
Heritage conservation is not only about preserving old stones and historic façades, but also about the institutions, laws, and decision-making structures that shape our built environment every day. Who decides what is worth preserving? How do the various institutions—from local heritage offices to international organizations—collaborate (or clash)?
This panel discussion brings together experts from different institutions to explore the real-world challenges of heritage conservation and protection: from funding and bureaucracy to the often conflicting interests of preservation, development, and public use—all the way to the legal mandate of preserving cultural heritage for society.
Moderator: Silke Langenberg (ETH Zurich)
Stefan Wülfert (President, Federal Commission for Heritage Preservation)
Daniel Schneller (Canton Basel-Stadt, Heritage Department)
Simon Berger (President, KSD)
