Towards the end of the 19th century, department stores represented a new building task whose development was a direct consequence of the industrial revolution, the growth of cities, increasing availability of goods and rising prosperity. The buildings that emerged continue to shape our cities to varying degrees today and pose complex challenges with regard to possible concepts for their continued or subsequent use.
